A presidential history
The autopen wasn't invented for marketing — it was built for heads of state. Signature machines entered the White House in the 1940s, when the volume of presidential correspondence outgrew any human hand, and nearly every administration since has kept autopens working daily on letters, commissions, and photographs.
For decades the device stayed quietly in the background of American government. In 2005, the Justice Department concluded a president may lawfully direct an autopen to sign legislation, and in 2011 President Obama put that opinion to work — signing the PATRIOT Act extension by autopen from Europe, the first U.S. law ever signed that way.
In 2025 the autopen became front-page news, when questions were raised about President Biden's use of one for end-of-term pardons and commutations. The debate reached Congress and the Justice Department; Biden said the decisions were his own and the machine simply carried them out at scale, and constitutional lawyers widely noted that no law requires a president to sign by hand. Whatever one's politics, the episode confirmed what institutions have known for eighty years: when a real-ink signature has to happen at real volume, the autopen is how it gets done.
